The girls, Darcie Harrison, Claudia Radford, Leah Kairsingh, Hannah Smith, Clara Bracegirdle and Eleanor Hopkins, impressed the co-writer of the show, David Smart, when he watched them perform a song in aid of marine conservation earlier this year.

Mr Smart suggested to his co-writer and lyricist Brian Watson that the girls take part in Call Me Diana, to which he agreed.

After the third day of show rehearsals, Mr Watson spoke to the Guernsey Press and said how wonderfully the girls were getting on.

‘Our star of the show, Natasha John, said the girls were very professional during rehearsals, they knew exactly what to sing and had clearly worked really hard.

‘They rehearsed the opening number which has every member of the ensemble singing outside Buckingham Palace – it’s a really exciting thing to be part of at such a young age,’ he said.

The show explores the life of Princess Diana, has 20 original songs and has been 10 years in the making. Currently, the cast is working on the one-hour-long showcase and, if all goes well, could well be cast in the full performance on the West End.

‘Rehearsals in general are going superbly, the cast is fantastic,’ Mr Watson added.

After three weeks of rehearsals, the show case will be at Leicester Square Theatre on 19 September, which the Melrose students will take part in and feature in a song both at the start and the end of the show.

n A crowdfunding scheme has been set up to get a bigger orchestra for the show. To contribute, go to https://bit.ly/2kdTRVg.
