It was the second time islanders took their their doorsteps to show their appreciation in the form of applause.

Last Thursday in the UK the Clap for Carers event saw people from across the country come outside and clap at 8pm to show appreciation of the extra strain health care workers have been under since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

At 8pm last night, thousands came together again, clapping, cheering, whooping, honking their horns and making as much noise as possible.

Some even played musical instruments.

Holly Cutter, who lives on the outskirts of town, joined in and said it was heart warming to be part of the celebration of health workers.

'This is such an important time for the community to come together and show how grateful we are to those people who are working so hard to keep us safe.'

Many shared videos online with the hashtags #ClapForCarers and #GuernseyTogether.

The applause has been seen all across the UK as a way to give something back to healthcare workers and key workers while remaining socially distant.

One group that joined in on the clapping in Guernsey was staff at St John.

The service posted a video on their social media channels of some of their on-duty staff clapping.
