David II, a two-year-old degu, is one of the animals with this rare ability, and was selected by the animal charity to be placed in front of an English and Italian flag to decide the match result.

Degus are type of South American rodent with long, silky coats. They are sociable and vocal and like to chirrup and squeak with others, and they have a positive outlook on life.

‘All the animals here have a lovely personality,’ GSPCA manager Steve Byrne said.

According to the gifted degu, England will win their first ever Euros championship this weekend, on home turf in Wembley.

David II rolled backwards at first in his hamster ball, before moving to the other side of the room towards Italy.

He drifted around the Italian flag, suggesting a close match, before rolling over England. The knowledge eventually came to him that Gareth Southgate’s team would not leave their home stadium disappointed. Is this the biggest let down to Italy since pineapple on pizza? David II thinks so.

n David II was born at the GSPCA, and, along with many of his animal friends, is looking for a new home. Visit the GSPCA website for more details.
