Clipper passengers surprised by DeLorean

FERRY passengers were left wondering if they were travelling or time travelling on yesterday’s Clipper sailing, when a DeLorean time machine drove onto the car deck.

But rather than travelling to 1955 Hill Valley, it was heading to St Peter Port.

It is forming part of Thirst Music School’s 80s-themed Battle of the School Bands, which is taking place today.

Mark Elliot, owner of Sandstone productions, arrived in Guernsey yesterday from Southampton with his replica DeLorean time machine, complete with all the equipment.

The car will be parked in the foyer at Beau Sejour over the weekend and Mr Elliot will also be driving around the island to ensure as many people as possible get the chance to see the iconic car.

‘We head back to the UK on Monday, so we are here all weekend, if anyone wants to flag us down for a look inside the car they absolutely can,’ said Mr Elliot.

Mr Elliot has had the DeLorean for seven years and made all the equipment that goes inside during lockdown.

‘I had ran the car as a standard car for three years and then literally on the first day of lockdown I started building all the equipment that goes with it,’ he said.

‘I spent 5,000 hours on it altogether.

He got the vehicle from the US as a non-starter nine years ago.

Thirst Music School director Wayne Mahy said that he was looking for a way to make the Battle of the Bands bigger this year.

‘It was our 10-year anniversary last year and had hoped to do something big but we sadly lost my mum, so this year we are doing this to celebrate that,’ said Mr Mahy.

The Battle of the School Bands is 80s-themed this year, so all the students have to perform at least one song from the 1980s in their set of three songs.

‘With it being an 80s theme and we wanted a way to make it bigger, so looked for someone who had a replica Delorean.’

Mr Mahy came up with the idea of using the DeLorean time machine to show how he was looking to bring the Battle of the School bands back to what it was before lockdown.

‘It’s the idea that the school are going back in the past to before lockdown to make the event as big as it was then,’ said Mr Elliot.

BWCI has sponsored this year’s event for the fourth year running, enabling the music school to bring the DeLorean over from the UK.

‘They are very proud to be a part of this,’ said Carly Tucknott, who works at BWCI as well as being head of vocal studies at Thirst.

In keeping with the 80s themed Battle of the Bands and the DeLorean being at Beau Sejour, the Back to the Future movie will be shown at Beau Cinema tomorrow.
