There were 14 representatives of Guernsey’s emergency services at the event at Government House, including police, firefighters, prison staff and Guernsey Civil Protection volunteers.

Former Guernsey Police detective inspector David Ecuyer was awarded a 40-year bar.

Mr Ecuyer had been a police officer for 41 years and six months, and retired from policing last week, just after the event.

‘I’m going on to different things.

‘I’m staying in Guernsey but won’t be part of Guernsey Police,’ said Mr Ecuyer.

He said that he was proud to have served in Guernsey for 10 and a half years and in Kent for around 30 years.

Mr Ecuyer said it was great to receive the award alongside other emergency personnel.

‘The evening was amazing, with fire services and colleagues and volunteers,’ he said.

‘We were all there and there was a sense of comradeship with different people.’

Civil protection officer Dave Hodge received the Home Affairs Meritorious Service Medal.

Mr Hodge was appointed as a civil protection officer in 2016 and said he was proud and honoured to receive the award.

‘It was very pleasant,' he said, 'and a great opportunity to share the experience with colleagues from other services.'

Never knowing what is going to land on his desk the next day and a good variation is what Mr Hodge enjoys most about being a civil protection officer.

The awards ceremony was attended by about 40 people – the award recipients, and their friends and family.

‘We all owe a significant debt of gratitude to these uniformed officers for their unwavering contribution to our society,’ said Lt-Governor Richard Cripwell.

Other recipients of the long service awards were station officer Daniel Joyce, custody officer Steve Addison, police constables Andrew Bell and Philip Graves, and detective constables Martin Todd and Jack Wynn, Sergeant Ben Rowe and special constable Emma Rayson.

Guernsey Civil Protection volunteers Christine Grimes, Christine and Therese Guerin and Susan Ryde were also recognised on the evening.
