Sun, wind and smiles for marathon runners

The sun shone – though the wind blew all around the course – for those running the Sure Guernsey Marathon on Sunday.

A variety of people, from elite athletes to newer runners and corporate relay teams took to the course which started and finished at the bottom of the Val des Terres and went around the island’s coast.

Hannah Upfield, who is currently working as a nurse on a placement in Jersey, came over to compete.

‘It’s a really nice course, very picturesque, and being on the road it was nice and flat,’ she said.

It was her fourth marathon, but first time running in Guernsey, and her first marathon that was not an off-road marathon. She completed her run in just over four hours which she said she was happy with.

‘My muscles really started cramping up so it got a bit harder later on but the smooth surface helped,’ she said.

Also visiting Guernsey especially for the marathon was John Gavin. It was his 37th marathon, but first time running in Guernsey, having come over from Bristol.

‘It was very windy out there, no matter where you are around the coast it feels like there is always a headwind,’ he said.

‘I reckon without the wind you could shave 20-30 minutes off our times, but it was a good course and more undulating than I initially thought.’

The full marathon was won by Morocco’s Otmane Menbar in a new course record with Rosie Adamson of Jersey topping the women’s podium.

The Mourant relay element of the marathon saw groups of runners share the miles between either two or five competitors.

‘It was great, but hard and very windy,’ said Mrs Collenette.

‘It’s our first time running the marathon as a relay team and it worked really well.’
