Press ‘exit poll’ hints at several election shocks

Several surprises and upsets are forecast for today’s election declaration on the evidence of an ‘exit poll’ conducted by the Guernsey Press yesterday.

They could include a newcomer topping the poll, the success of about a dozen women – several of them new to the States – and the demise of several senior or long-serving deputies. Indications last night showed that more than a dozen, perhaps even as many as 15, could be set to fall.

More than 700 people took part in telling us how they voted and the results as they were at 10pm last night made for stimulating reading, although no clear pattern was emerging over what factors may have influenced the voting public.

Several of the serving deputies who currently sit outside our poll have been enthusiastic supporters of a goods and services tax, but the majority of those near the top of the poll could hardly be described as ardent opponents of GST.

The ‘curse of Education’ may have struck again, however, with three members of the committee set to miss out according to our poll.

It is not known when the election result will be announced today, but a declaration in the early evening is a possibility, as fewer candidates, fewer voters and more counting machines are expected to speed counting up.
