However, disabled islanders will face a challenge after Guernsey Post confirmed the site would not be wheelchair accessible on its opening day.

Guernsey Post has closed its desk in the Coop in the Market building and is moving back to 7, Commercial Arcade – the former site of the Coop pharmacy.

But the building is listed and dates back to about the 1820s. That, combined with a high step through the door, is a challenge for those trying to make the site accessible.

Guernsey Post head of corporate engagement Dawn Gallienne said being part of the Arcade placed the business in a vibrant and well-used location.

‘We are committed to ensuring this location is welcoming and accessible to everyone,’ she said.

In the meantime, Guernsey Post is looking at options for a temporary ramp, although this is also not straightforward, due to shape and location of the step.

For customers who require step-free access, Envoy House branch, about 1.5 miles away in La Vrangue, is step-free.

‘We appreciate our customers’ patience and support while we work to enhance accessibility at the Arcade.’

To facilitate the transition, the North Plantation post office will be closed today, though PO Box holders will still be able to access their boxes until noon.

From Tuesday, all PO Box services will be available at the new Arcade Post Office. EBOX Customers will be able to access their parcels at Guille-Alles Library from Monday.

The postal museum, planned for the top floor of the building, will open to visitors at the end of July. The branch will open at 8.30am tomorrow.
