Greg Josey is one week into his personal challenge. After twisting his ankle and failing to complete the Les Bourgs 30 Walks in 30 Days challenge in April, he decided to set himself his own mission at a later date to continue his support for the local charity.
So far into the month, he has maintained about 36,000 steps a day, which covers nearly 18 miles.
He said he was addicted to challenges and was following a regime to ensure he hits his impressive daily goal.
‘Get up early, don’t watch TV and walk three times a day,’ he said.
‘My family think I’m mad so I’m doing it alone. The mornings are hard, but as soon as I get out I’m inspired to keep on going.
‘We forget where we live – it’s such a beautiful place. Walking the coastline and around the lanes, it’s amazing. I don’t think I’ve listened to the birds for years, and now I do. Last night I walked from Beaucette Marina to Pembroke and the views were just beautiful – it does make it easier. I don’t think I could do it in London.’
Mr Josey, commercial manager at Manor Farm Foods, said he took up running in 2019 as a way to lose weight and started to join local challenges.
He said the various events organised by Les Bourgs were a particularly enjoyable source of motivation, and he had been an enthusiastic participant in most of them over the past five years.
‘I love the variety,’ he said. ‘It involves every type of person and I’ve met so many people through doing them. It’s also a great local cause.
‘It’s not necessarily personal to me, but I think it’s personal to the island. Every single person in Guernsey could do one of their challenges.’
Les Bourgs Hospice provides compassionate and professional care to islanders suffering from life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones.
Mr Josey said he was further inspired by the 10-minute YouTube video which he found on the charity’s website.
It gave him further insight into the work and care delivered by the hospice.
‘I’ve watched it probably three or four times and it just makes me so emotional,’ he said.
‘I think everyone should watch it.’
The video is produced by James Harrison and can be watched on www.lesbourgshospice.org.gg/about-us.
