Lynn died in 2017 from an undetected heart condition and her niece Kirsty Dempster organised the challenge in memory of her auntie who loved swimming.

The Swim for Lynn challenge is running throughout the whole of August and is encouraging islanders to track the distances they swim this month which will be combined with other swimmers.

‘We hope to do 73km because Auntie Lynn would have been 73 this year,’ said Miss Dempster.

This year’s event will raise funds for Guernsey Chest & Heart.

‘We have raised £600 so far and people can donate to our giving.gg page,’ said Miss Dempster.

The event was launched with a swim at the bathing pools on 1 August and will finish with a group swim on the August Bank Holiday Monday.

‘It was great, over 40 swimmers came together for that event,’ said Miss Dempster.

The last Swim for Lynn event was in 2022 – to mark the five-year anniversary of her death – and a team of about 50 people came together at Beau Sejour pool and set out to complete the distance of the English Channel.

‘We ended up swimming the length of the channel there and back,’ said Miss Dempster.

‘It’s different this time doing it over the course of the month and we really rely on people supporting us.’
