La Grande Mare teeing up for world-class golf offering

Golf is about to return to La Grande Mare – though players will have to wait a little longer to get out on the course itself.

More than five years after plans to transform it into a world-class resort were revealed, the first phase of its redevelopment opens to the paying public next month following the completion of the new ‘Golf Performance Centre’.

The practice and coaching facility marks a major milestone in the multi-million pound project, which also entails a total re-shaping of the 18-hole course and the creation of a new clubhouse.

Owner Steve Lansdown, the billionaire businessman who bought the former hotel at the end of 2018, said he was both proud and relieved to see the first stage finally come to fruition.

'To see the finished product, that’s when you really think it was worthwhile. When I look at the technology and tuition bays, I’m wowed,’ he said today.

Demolition of the former hotel structure began in spring 2022 following a lengthy planning process, and the project had been slated for completion this year.

But it will be towards autumn 2026 when the redesigned course will be ready to play on, despite the major landscaping work having already been completed.

‘The course is actually finished, but it’s now in its bedding-in phase, so it needs 12 months and I’m looking at August next year for the course to come on stream,’ said Mr Lansdown.

‘As for the buildings and the country club itself, that’s the following year – at the end of 2027.’

While the project team is yet to reveal further details about plans for visitor accommodation on the site, it confirmed that guest ‘lodges’ are still part of the scheme and are within the planning permission and build contract.

The club house has been taking shape in recent months and will include a 25m pool, a spa, gym, restaurant, and cafe – all part of creating a compelling offer to visiting players, according to the man behind the redevelopment.

‘I don’t think I could rely on just the islanders for this to pay for itself,’ said Mr Lansdown.

‘The whole purpose when I bought La Grande Mare was because this was a hotel, we had a certain amount of tourism responsibility and the idea is we will attract people here on golf holidays.

‘We have created a course that people will want to come and play.

'This project is also about stewardship and regeneration, supporting local jobs and suppliers, enhancing the natural environment, and creating a destination that contributes to Guernsey’s economy for decades to come.’

The performance centre, which is accessed from a new entrance on Rue du Gele and opens on 1 November, features 10 practice bays, along with two for instruction and playing simulated courses, as well as a cafe and club fitting room.

‘I can’t say I’ve seen every golf facility in the UK, but from what I’m told, it’s up there with the best, if not one of the best,’ said Mr Lansdown.

‘It’s been designed with modern-day technology in mind and to provide a facility that everybody can benefit from.’
