Alice de Freitas retired from her position as housekeeper at the end of June 2025, after almost 24 years in the role.
She said although she was not one for the spotlight, she was truly honoured to receive the long service award.
‘I would like to thank everyone at Government House, and in particular the current Lt-Governor, for his kindness and for nominating me for this award,’ she said.
‘I am deeply thankful for the trust placed in me over the years and for the people I have had the privilege of working with. Serving the island of Guernsey in this way has meant a great deal to me and has been both rewarding and memorable.’
The Royal Victorian Medal is a decoration established by Queen Victoria in April 1896 and is awarded to individuals for personal service to the monarch or royal family.
Mrs De Freitas added that it had been a great privilege to serve at Government House for so long.
‘I have been fortunate to work alongside many dedicated and professional colleagues, and I see this recognition as a reflection of the teamwork and mutual respect that has always been part of my role,’ she said.
‘Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work under several Lt-Governors and alongside many staff, all of whom have contributed to making Government House such a special place. I am sincerely grateful for the kindness, support and friendships I have been shown throughout my time there.’
Current Lt-Governor Sir Richard Cripwell paid personal tribute to his housekeeper of the past four years.
‘We were all delighted when we learned that Alice was to receive the Royal Victorian Medal in recognition of her 24 years of service,’ he said.
‘Distinguished by a high work rate and a forensic attention to detail, she has worked tirelessly to help keep Government House looking its best, and her hugely positive attitude and smiling face has been a big part of all of our lives for many years.’
