Ormer Game needs more players to go ahead

THE Ormer Game – Guernsey’s somewhat less gruesome version of Squid Game – is set to take place again next month after its successful run last year.

Provided a sufficient number of participants sign up, the game will take place at Rue Mainguy, with two separate sessions being held over the course of the day – one for those aged 10-15, and another for anyone over the age of 16.

‘Last year it took place in Guernsey and then in Alderney, and it was a huge success,’ said organiser Debbie Duport.

‘It will be the same thing this year, but with a few new games.’

The concept was developed from Netflix’s hit show Squid Game, which follows a group of people as they compete in a series of games for money, with losing participants facing elimination – literally – at the end of each round.

The Ormer Game, according to Mrs Dupont, is a ‘friendlier’ version of the game, in which no one dies and the ultimate winner will take home a cash prize. The rest of the money raised by the game will be split between the Guernsey Alzheimers Association and a charity or fundraiser of the victor’s choice.

The games involved in the Ormer Game will be playground games, similar in nature to those played in Squid Game, including one named ‘Red Light Green Light’ – a game not dissimilar to the playground classic Granny’s Footsteps.

‘It’s fun, it’s a challenge, and it’s a great way to support a charity you care about,’ said Mrs Duport.

But take-up is currently lower than last year, which quickly sold out of places. Mrs Duport is looking for numbers to increase by the weekend, or she may be forced to cancel. Sign up at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/the-ormer-game-friendly-version-of-the-squid-game.

Anyone over the age of 10 is eligible to sign up for the Ormer Game, which is planned to take place on Saturday 7 February.
