Every Tuesday night at 6.30pm, runners of all abilities are invited to meet outside the Town pub and join its newly-formed Run Club.
General manager Mandy Roberts said the aim was to build community.
‘We made the decision to create a small running club after our charity marathon run in November,’ she said.
‘We had a lot of interest from our regulars and our team. We hope to make running more fun by transforming a solo activity into a shared inclusive experience. It’s about keeping fit and healthy, making new friends and it’s also great for mental wellbeing. Everyone will set their own personal goals and run at their own level.’
The club has been running throughout January. It is free to join and this first month has focused largely on flat runs along the sea front.
Often split into two teams – beginners and more experienced – Miss Roberts said they each run for about half an hour before a rendezvous at the pub.
‘We will start proper running routes through Strava this month,’ she said.
‘But this first month has been just a meet and greet, really – getting to know everyone’s goals. Once people start dedicating to it, we might start charging a small fee and use that money to put on social events for them, such as dinner parties. This club is not about business for the pub – it’s about community. We just want to offer an opportunity for people to meet and get together.’
Anyone keen to get involved is welcome to join in at any point, no booking necessary.
