30 Rides in 30 Days raises more than £70k for hospice

This year’s 30 Rides in 30 Days Challenge has raised more than £70,000 for Les Bourgs Hospice – taking their total since the event began in 2008 to £1.25m.

Now in its 19th year, and sponsored once again by Ian Brown’s Cycle Shop, 80 islanders took part in the annual cycling challenge, including 16 first-timers, pledging to ride their bikes for one hour each day over 30 consecutive days.

Event organiser Ian Brown was delighted with this year’s total.

‘I am very grateful, as always, to all the riders for their efforts out on their bicycles and their supporters who donated to the fundraising in various ways,’ he said.

‘There were cake sales, quiz nights, mountain bike events, schools’ participation, OFAD [Only Fools and Donkeys] Sportive as well as the usual static bike rides at many local large retail outlets.

‘The event demonstrates what value and appreciation the Guernsey community has for Les Bourgs Hospice and the care and support it offers islanders and their families.’

Les Bourgs Hospice CEO Rob Jones said the charity was profoundly grateful to everyone who rode, donated or supported the challenge.

‘These funds make a real and immediate difference to the care we can provide for islanders and their families,’ he said.

‘My thanks go to Ian Brown and his team for their unwavering commitment. Ian’s recent MBE is a fitting recognition of the impact he has had on local charities, including Les Bourgs Hospice.’

Supported for the fifth year running by Specsavers, the total raised this year included a £15,000 donation from the Guernsey company, bringing their overall contribution to more than £70,000 across the five-year sponsorship.

Woodies Coffee outlets also gave a donation from each cup of coffee sold during the 30-day event and The Kiln at Oatlands hosted a First Day Breakfast for the riders at the start of their challenge on 2 May.

‘It’s been great to be able to support this fantastic fundraising event and play a part in reaching this phenomenal figure,’ said Nick James of Specsavers.

‘The commitment from everyone involved year after year is truly inspiring, and we’re proud to have been part of such an important cause for the local community.’
