Aurigny flights disrupted after islands shrouded in fog

Heavy fog shrouding both Guernsey and Alderney on Saturday and again for periods on Sunday led to a weekend of disruption for Aurigny and the airport.

The airline spent the whole of Sunday trying to catch up after just three flights got into the island, two before 10am and then a flight from Exeter after 5pm which carried passengers from Grenoble who had been diverted earlier in the day.

Five flights left the island during the day, but only one after 10.30am. One direct skiing service to France had to be cancelled.

Aurigny said that four ATRs had made several attempts each to land on Saturday and ‘had no choice to remain outside of Guernsey’. That meant that four aircraft and sets of crew started yesterday in the wrong place and the airline warned early yesterday of widespread delays all day.

Ultimately 25 flights were cancelled on Sunday. Aurigny had rebooked many passengers on to the next available flights but admitted that with limited availability at the end of half term, that this would take longer than usual for some.

Some passengers yesterday were transferred to the Voyager ferry leaving Poole at 3pm and with further weather-related cancellations during the day, it is understood that the same will happen again tomorrow.

Passengers reported that Aurigny chartered a jet to get skiers back from Grenoble but the plane was overweight to land in Guernsey and so headed to Jersey to lose luggage first.

The airport stayed open well beyond usual opening hours. Alderney saw no flights all weekend, but Jersey was only impacted by Guernsey delays.
