A group of nine local scouts have challenged themselves to cycle the distance from Guernsey to Gdansk in Poland to raise money to attend the 2027 World Scout Jamboree.

The World Scout Jamboree is one of the most significant events in the global Scouting movement, bringing together thousands of young people from around the world to celebrate unity, adventure, and cultural exchange.

Held approximately every four years, the jamboree is a gathering unlike any other, offering Scouts the opportunity to experience a world of diversity while participating in activities that foster personal growth, leadership, and global citizenship.

With the 2027 Jamboree taking place in Gdansk, the group are hoping to be able to raise some of the £40,000 they need to find to all go – by cycling 1,600km on static bikes at events taking place around the island. On Saturday afternoon the Scouts kicked off the challenge at Victoria Park, before Guernsey FC’s match against Bexhill United.

‘We worked out that it’s about 80 hours of cycling,’ said Gareth Nicolle, one of the organisers of the challenge. We are starting today and have some other events lined up as well, like Seafront Sundays.’

45 minutes into their challenge on Saturday the scouts said that it had been a bit tiring, but raising money for them to attend the Jamboree would be worth it.

‘We have our training camp in Jersey next week which should be good,’ said Scout Finlay Sneddon, 16.
