Islanders get their hands dirty for Great Big Green Week

Great Big Green Week – an annual event celebrating community action that protects nature and fights climate change – was marked at the Salvation Army Community Centre yesterday with a guided community plant-potting session.

The event saw islanders gather to get their hands dirty as they potted new plants, tended to a set of donated plants, and gleaned some tips for growing at home.

‘This is the first time we are joining in with the Green Week, and it has been very popular,’ said centre manager Sarka Lee.

‘The Salvation Army is all about serving the community, and it was very nice to see everyone smiling and happy.’

The Great Big Green Week is a nationwide celebration, which regularly sees well over a million people across Britain engage in various activities to promote sustainability and conservation.

‘I think it’s good for people to develop a more intimate relationship with nature,’ said Ms Lee.

‘When you’ve touched the soil, it really becomes your plant, and you want to take care of it.’

Ms Lee has only recently taken over as centre manager at the community centre, but is already planning to expand the range of community activities available for islanders to participate in, including more nature-focused and planting events intended to take place during the school summer holidays.

‘We’re hoping to do a lot more events in the future,’ said Salvation Army events coordinator Jill Chadwick.

‘We’ve had a lot of people who wanted to join in today, and I think events like these really bring people together.’
