I’ve been involved with the Pride of Guernsey awards evening in many different roles.
Reporter, table host, even as an on-stage presenter, standing in for Andy Priaulx. Whatever I’ve been doing, it’s always been a joyous occasion.
The positivity in the room reflects well on all the nominees, on the Guernsey Press, and on the island as a whole. The awards, and most importantly, our nominees, are something, and some people, we should feel genuinely proud of.
The stories behind the Pride of Guernsey are exactly the kind of thing that local newspapers should be highlighting, reflecting the very best about the people in our community, and why so many of them do the selfless things that they do.
It is hard work for our team, interviewing what, last year, was more than 200 nominations received across all the categories, but it is a privilege to be able to hear and retell the stories of these, inevitably modest, ‘heroes’.
And that is why, although it is something of a cliche, I do always feel that every one of our nominees are winners.
Only one person in each category can collect an award on finals night, but every nominee has a lovely, and often selfless story behind them.
The awards night has always been a special occasion for everyone involved.
I do hope that if you are not among the shortlisted nominees or sponsors, that you will feel able to join us on the night, through social media, or watching the livestream.
And please do feel that you can get involved in the Pride of Guernsey, by submitting a nomination of a worthy individual or group.
The success of these awards absolutely depends on people being put forward, and being celebrated by their fellow islanders.
