The Next Chapter is a literacy programme run by Bright Beginnings and, as part of this, Tina goes into Amherst Primary School on a weekly basis to hear children read.
‘Her work is making a real difference and having a positive impact on the children she supports,’ said Claire Cunningham, literacy programme coordinator at Bright Beginnings.
Tina started at the beginning of this academic year after retiring last summer.
‘I didn’t want to retire and do nothing at all, so I looked at volunteers.gg and saw they wanted a volunteer to help with reading,’ she said.
‘I always worked in an office so wanted to do something a bit different.
‘Engaging with the children helps you keep up to date with the current world.’
Tina said she looks forward to going back to her old school to help out with reading.
‘Amherst was my school and I love it,’ she said.
‘I look forward to going every week and it’s nice to see the children and watch them grow in confidence with their reading.
‘One of them told me he had moved up a level in the books they read, which he was chuffed about, and I was chuffed for him too.’
As well as volunteering for Bright Beginnings, Tina also volunteers at the Salvation Army charity shop.
