This morning, the Armed Forces Day flag was raised on the mast of the Weighbridge Roundabout and more will be raised at other locations around the island.
The displays serve as a visible reminder of those currently serving, military families, veterans and cadets.
‘Armed Forces Week provides an opportunity for the wider community to show its appreciation for those who currently serve, those who have served in the past, and the families who support them,’ said the Guernsey Armed Forces Committee.
‘The Bailiwick has a proud and long-standing connection with the armed forces, and we are fortunate to have many serving personnel, veterans and cadets within our community.
‘This week is about recognising the dedication, sacrifice and commitment of our armed forces community and thanking them for the service they give, and have given, to our country.’
An exhibition showcasing the work of soldier, artist, writer and diplomat Colonel Valentine Rudolph Burkhardt will be on display in the Market Halls.
He was the grandfather of local resident Peter Burkhardt, who has loaned his grandfather’s collection of artwork and medals for public display.
The free exhibition will be open 12-4pm on Friday, 10am-4pm on Saturday and 10am-2pm on Sunday.
Members of the Royal British Legion Guernsey Welfare Team will also be present throughout the exhibition to offer support, guidance and advice to any veterans, serving personnel or their families who may wish to speak with them.
A number of hospitality businesses across the Bailiwick have offered discounts and promotions to serving personnel and veterans throughout the week, ranging from food and drink discount to reduced-rate staycations and experiences.
Former Royal Marine Commando Mark Ormrod, triple amputee, bestselling author and Invictus Games gold medallist, will be speaking at an event at Les Cotils on Friday, sharing his story of resilience, determination and service.
