The previous high was set on 9 August 2003 when temperatures reached 34.3C, however yesterday’s heat pushed the mercury to 36.4C at the airport during the afternoon.

Many islanders reported even higher figures but the island’s official data is recorded at Guernsey Airport, where temperature readings have been taken since 1947.

It was the third time in a week that the June temperature record was broken as the heatwave that had gripped much of Europe intensified.

Before this month, the previous hottest temperature recorded for June was the 30.8C seen in 1976.

Last month, a new temperature record for May was also set in Guernsey with a high of 31.5C recorded on 26 May.
