The cash box which had been stolen from the Blue Chicken House Bakery stall in Brock Road, St Peter Port, has been found hidden in a bush.
Owner James Manger said he had been inundated with messages of support since the Guernsey Press ran a story about the incident on Saturday – including a tip-off about the whereabouts of the cash box.
Someone got in touch after spotting the item while walking their dog in the Arsenal Road area near Victoria Tower.
‘I ran up there straight away,’ said Mr Manger.
‘We contacted the police and they asked us not to touch it.’
It is now being tested for fingerprints as part of the police investigation.
Mr Manger is a professional chef who has used the stall to sell cookies and other bakery products since March.
But when he went to check it on Friday morning, he found that the cash box had been ripped out of the wall, the card reader and camera stolen and damage caused which he estimates will cost hundreds of pounds to repair.
‘There are horrible people but it’s a small minority,’ he said.
‘A lot of people have reached out to me and told me they have had a similar experience. These stories are really sad. Lots of people have given up, thinking “what’s the point?”.
‘Initially it put me off but the community outreach was so strong it really inspired me to keep going.
‘What we love most isn’t that the cash box was found. It’s that someone spotted it, knew exactly where it came from and took the time to help.’
He is asking for anyone who lives along the route from Doyle’s to the Arsenal Road area to check any CCTV or Ring camera footage they might have for about 1.30am on Friday 26 June. He is also asking the public to look out for a discarded camera or battery pack.
