Science success at St Sampson’s High

St Sampson's High head teacher Vicky Godley said the school was very pleased with this year’s GCSE achievements, but students had done particularly well in science.

‘We’ve had positive results and we’re very pleased that our achievement has increased,’ she said.

‘We’ve had lots of grade 9s, or top marks. Our students have worked really hard, as well as the staff.

‘And science in our core subjects has done really well.’

Several students were pleased with their science results, including head boy and girl Joe Prince and Olivia Whitmore, both 16.

Joe earned a grade 9 in science as well as English Literature, PE, maths and history, having sat a total of eight subjects.

He is now heading to Elizabeth College on a scholarship to study maths, physics and PE.

‘I really enjoy PE as a subject and my teacher has really encouraged me,’ he said.

Olivia was also happy with her results and hopes to do something science-related in the future.

‘I am particularly interested in science and so I hope to do something in maybe neuroscience,’ she said.

Olivia sat eight exams and received 9s in physical education and graphics. She is planning to study biology, chemistry and psychology A-levels at the Sixth Form Centre.

‘All of the teachers here are so lovely and once the exams started they became even more supportive, which was really nice,’ she said.

‘I think I enjoyed my GCSEs but I know I enjoyed my time at this school.’

Two 9s in science as well as one in history and another in PE were achieved by Bobby de la Mare, 16, who is now heading to the Sixth Form Centre for biology, chemistry and PE A-levels.

‘I really enjoy PE and hopefully I’ll end up doing something sports related as a career, maybe something medical,’ he said.

Sixteen-year-old Imogen Ellis sat eight exams, including the science double award, and scored a 9 in music.

‘I am very happy with my results but also quite relieved that it is done,’ she said.

She plans to continue her education at Elizabeth College, doing music, psychology and history A-levels, which she hopes will then pave the way into studying law.

‘I have just done a week’s work experience with Carey Olsen and enjoyed it so much that I hope to be able to go back to them to work and study after my A-levels,’ she said.

‘I’d like to give a shout out to my music teacher, Ms Tennant, because she was absolutely amazing and in my opinion the best music teacher on the island.’

Imogen’s next move was to tell her mum about her results. She said had been her ‘rock’ throughout her studies.
