Liberation done right

Today offers an opportunity to reflect on Liberation Day celebrations and offer a pat on the back to those involved in the organisation of them for a job well done.

The shape of celebrations has been one of change in recent years, since Covid, as the States has wrestled with social distancing, decentralisation to the parishes, upping the game for quinquennial celebrations, and then toning it down modestly on other occasions to find something that most, if not all, will agree is a Goldilocks option – ‘just right’.

Maybe yesterday was that day. Lead political organiser Deputy Andy Cameron said he received ‘really positive feedback’ and that there ‘genuinely was something for everyone to enjoy’ while the States cut the budget.

His assessment was ‘it’s people, community spirit, positive attitudes [and good weather] that make Liberation Day such a success’. It’s a fair summary for a day well done.

People have latched on to the cavalcade, with participants always eager to take part, making it now a core part of annual celebrations. And with the centre of the St Peter Port back at the centre of activities, most seemed happy, with limited, but high quality options out of town.

Well done to all involved, from the traditional to the modern. Saturday was a fitting celebration of our national day.
