ENGLAND international Mariana Agathangelou won the outstanding player award, but Guernsey had their own ace in the pack as they retained the 72nd Gilson Cup by a surprisingly comfortable margin at the Rohais on Saturday.

New cap Ove Svenstrup, once a European under-21s mixed doubles champion from Denmark, marked his second national debut in fantastic style. He won four of his five rubbers and was only denied the individual award in the penultimate round of closing mixed matches, in which he and Gayle Lloyd were beaten 21-15 in the deciding third by Agathangelou and Alex Hutchings.

Stuart Hardy, the Guernsey captain, admitted he did not expect it to be so easy, especially without the services of their top men's and women's players, namely Elena Johnson and Paul Le Tocq, both playing league matches in Switzerland.

'We didn't expect to win with a full round of mixed to go,' Hardy added.
