The Raiders’ success, winning 35-28 to get their hands back on the famous trophy, came after Guernsey’s footballers had retained the Muratti Vase with a brilliant 2-1 victory in Jersey.

Goals from Matt Loaring and Ross Allen - coupled with a standout performance from goalkeeper Josh Addison - secured a first Vase triumph at Springfield in 12 years.

And the sporting success did not end there.

Earlier in the day, local bowls legend Alison Merrien won another world title in Australia, while the island’s cricketers began their tournament with victory over Sweden in Cyprus.

The cricket continues this week as Guernsey bid for a place in the next stage of T20 World Cup qualifying - with Jersey among the sides standing in their way.

And there is more significant sport to come next weekend as Guernsey’s women travel to Springfield for their Muratti showdown and Guernsey FC welcome Peacehaven in their much-anticipated league play-off final.

Elsewhere on Siam day, the Raiders Ladies were narrowly beaten 20-19 and the Vikings held 21-21 in the Fallaize Cup as Jersey retained both trophies on a day which delivered the close contests most expected.

Jersey took the thirds honours, lifting the newly-named Woody Cup, while it was Guernsey’s vets who got the day off in style with a big win in the Nash Cup.
