The retirement of veteran trainer Tom Bougourd two years ago meant that, contrary to a long-established tradition, there were no longer any racehorses being prepared and run on island, but former showjumping star Jan Coomer and training colleague Nick Bougourd have plugged that gap and have three horses in training at the Richmond Farm base at Vazon.
Bougourd, 30, who will act as stable jockey and assistant trainer to the officially licensed Coomer, said yesterday that a fourth horse could soon arrive.
Guernsey Race Club president Trevor Gallienne said confirmation of the new training stable was great news for the local and CI racing scene. 'We have missed having locally trained horses which was once the basis of the local racing scene, so this is great news,' said Gallienne.
