No Cann do for the holders as Guernsey turn on the style

GUERNSEY produced a magnificent display to beat a Jersey side with Liz Cann in their ranks and win back the Gilson Cup in comprehensive fashion.

By the close of play on an action-packed afternoon at the Rohais Badminton Halls, it was a resounding 20-10 home success for those wearing green.

On this evidence Jersey's stranglehold on an event they went eight years unbeaten from 2005 to 2011 looks to be well over, as this was the third Sarnian success in four.

A year ago without Paul Le Tocq and Elena Johnson they succumbed to a powerful line-up across the water, but with their two star names available this time, it was a different story.

Jersey had played mind games in the build-up by refusing to publicly name their team and perhaps they thought that the inclusion of UK-born former England No. 1 Cann would be a hammer blow come game day.

But the efforts of Le Tocq, Johnson and player-of-the-day Sarah Garbutt – who were all unbeaten – blew away the hopes of the visitors that rested largely on the shoulders of Cann and Mark Constable.

That home Guernsey trio were every bit as imperious as you now come so used to them being, but in truth, this was a superb team performance where everybody contributed.

In particular, a spell of six rubbers shortly after lunchtime was the key and in the words of captain Le Tocq afterwards, 'broke the back of the contest'.
