The Mariners Inn again played host to the 2016 Island Championships across five categories, but it turned out to be all eyes on the blue riband men's singles.

Going into the tournament regarded as the best player never to have won the island pool title, Hughes battled his way through to the final by seeing off Craig de Carteret and former champion Jess de la Haye.

However, many still regarded him as an underdog against Skillett, who had himself knocked out defending champion Martyn Desperques in the quarter-finals and then Paul Davies in the semis.

But after being level pegging at 6-6 at the interval, Hughes won four frames on the trot to be crowned champion.

It was a different story in the women's singles final, as Rachel Sutton won another island title with a 6-0 whitewash of Denise Cull.

In defeating Cull, it secured Sutton's ninth island title.
