Guernsey squash players make their European debut
GUERNSEY made their bow in the European Team Championships yesterday when the 2017 Division Three tournament got under way in Jersey.
The Sarnians' debut at this level came in the morning session when they lost their opening Pool D match to Slovakia 3-1.
Janick Radford was the first Guernsey player to register a win in the European Team Championships as he came from 2-1 down to beat Miroslav Ller 11-13, 11-6, 0-11, 11-9, 11-9 in a 56min. epic.
However, there were straight-game defeats for Martin Watts and Laurence Graham, to Marek Mnik and Matej Mancirik respectively, while Henry Birch lost in four to Tomas Toth at No. 1 string.
Guernsey went one better in the evening session, though, earning a 2-2 draw against Luxembourg.
Again Radford provided a point with an 11-3, 11-3, 15-13 win over Kyllian Hebbelinck and there was an 11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6 victory for Mark Le Conte against Guillaume Plancke.
Mark Radley and Arnaud Masset beat Birch and Watts in straight games respectively.
Guernsey play their final pool match today against Romania, who lost 4-0 to Luxembourg.
