He did just that on his return to the island but among the joy and excitement, there was one snatch of sadness.

The man he and his coaching team tagged ‘the New Van Dyk’ will not be available for further Island selection.

Sam Hale was outstanding, said the Guernsey coach.

‘He was classy and confident, always had time on the ball,’ said his coach. ‘But he is due to leave the island, which is gutting for us,’ he added.

Others received similar acclaim.

‘“Strawbs” and Simon Geall led the old guard on and off the pitch and it was the best I’ve seen Simon play for years.

‘To have James Hamon in goal gave us great confidence and he showed why he’s a professional footballer. He’s more than capable of getting a new club.

‘Tyler [McKane] stood out on the wing and did a fantastic job and Matty Loaring played like the Matty of old.’

The new soon-to-be Manzur strikeforce of Will Fazakerley and Marlon Jardim also hit it off.

‘Marlon’s first touch is fantastic and he created opportunities for others. He could be an influence if he remains fit and pushes himself.

‘We asked “Faz” to do his role slightly differently and he was immense in the semis and final.’
