Sam Culverwell joins elite racing team Trinity
SAM CULVERWELL’S ‘mystery’ elite team, the one that hopefully leads him to become a World Tour rider, was announced this morning.
The 19-year-old Guernseyman is one of 11 riders who will represent U23 outfit Trinity Racing, who formerly specialised in cyclocross, in their maiden road season.
U23 Paris-Roubaix winner Tom Pidcock is the headline name of a development-driven squad that will target some of the most prestigious races for ‘espoirs’ across Europe.
Such is the long-term appeal of Trinity that Culverwell has declined a contract offer from each of Britain’s UCI Continental teams.
‘It’s incredibly exciting to be part of this team,’ said Culverwell.
‘I had a lot of contract offers last year and at the end of the season, I got contacted by a manager from the team.
‘I just decided it was probably the best possible offer I could have got with the calendar they have put together. It is the best team I could ride for going into this year and future seasons, if I’m honest.’
Focal races include the ‘Baby Giro’, now serving as the U23 equivalent of the Giro d’Italia, and Culverwell will be eagerly hoping for a call-up.
‘[They will target] a lot of other really high quality stage races and one-day races, and these are the sort of ‘window-shop’ races which World Tour teams look at.
‘This team will do their best to develop us into the best riders we can be so we get some results in those races and hopefully get picked up by World Tour teams in the next few years.’
Culverwell also paid tribute to the class of Trinity Sports Management, who support some of British Cycling’s biggest names.
This is not to mention the support to be gained from his hugely promising team-mates.
‘They are really, really nice, so we will have some good fun and hopefully get some results along the way.’
Culverwell is due to head out to Belgium soon and join the team’s preparations.
