Alvarez not giving up on title
JOSE ALVAREZ is not giving up on the FNB Priaulx League title even though Saturday’s loss at St Martin’s leaves them 11 points behind the leaders.
He takes his patched-up North side to the Track this evening bemoaning his luck with injuries and the fact they are seemingly ‘getting punished for every little mistake they make’.
Alvarez says he does not see the injury list significantly clearing any time soon.
‘We just need to weather that storm,’ he said ahead of tonight’s game against Bels and a trip to Sylvans at the weekend looming.
‘I don’t think we will have anyone back for the next few weeks,’ he added in looking down a list of absentees which includes Tom de la Mare, Scott Bougourd, Robbie Legg, Reece de Carteret and Sam Mahy.
‘I was disappointed with the [Saints] result but not the performance of the guys. We just need some players back.
‘I told the boys that we have played just four games, but there is a long way to go and we will try and stay as close as we possibly can to St Martin’s and Rovers. But the season is very long.’
As for Bels, their own title hopes are diminishing by the week.
Saturday’s 5-2 loss at Port Soif means they, too, sit 11 back of Saints with only the one game in hand.
It was the second game in succession the blue-and-whites have shipped five and if you include the Jeremie loss before that, it is now 14 goals conceded in three games.
Worse still, star man Charlton Gauvain limped off against Rovers and must be very doubtful for tonight’s clash, 7.30 kick-off.
