Indies show their strength to win the Spring Cup
Evening League kings Independents lifted the Dominion Spring Cup on Wednesday night after a convincing victory over Cobo.
After winning the toss and inserting the opposition in the T10 contest at the KGV, Indies restricted their opposition to 79 for 4.
Kieran Le Gallez removed both Cobo openers, Josh Butler and Ollie Nightingale, while there was a wicket apiece for Jake Roussel and Matt Stokes.
Will Peatfield had no reward in the wickets column, but he was economical as his two overs went at less than a run-a-ball and he also snapped up a couple of catches.
Charlie Birch top-scored for the blues with an unbeaten 29 from 23 balls while Ollie Newey’s late cameo of 24 at a strike-rate of 200 included the only six of the innings.
Although Indies captain Nathan Le Tissier fell to the first ball of the reply, caught by Newey off Luke Nussbaumer, the second-wicket pair of Tom Nightingale and Stokes broke the back of the run chase as they hit 28 apiece.
CJ Peatfield chipped in with 18 not out to see his side home with seven wickets and nine balls to spare.
Indies had reached the final with a nine-wicket win over Wanderers-Rovers on Tuesday when they chased down a target of 106 in less than six overs at Port Soif where Nightingale smashed 48 from just 19 balls, including five sixes, while Le Tissier and Stokes were also in the runs, finishing 31 and 23 not out respectively.
In the other semi-final, Cobo also required less than six overs to chase down their target, albeit Irregulars had been restricted to 75 for 7 from their 10, with Birch taking 3 for 9.
Dec Martel made an unbeaten 37 off 15 balls to guide Cobo to a six-wicket win.
• In Saturday’s Dominion Weekend Championship matches, Elizabeth College host Griffins in a 40-over contest at the College Field while Cobo face Wanderers-Irregulars at the KGV in a T20 match. Both start at 11am.
