‘We’re out of the running,' says Sylvans coach after Rovers defeat
Sylvans coach Jon Collenette is still targeting trophies this season – although he admits the Priaulx Cup is probably now out of reach.
The Westerners fell to their fourth league defeat of the season when they went down 3-1 to Rovers at the weekend.
‘So disappointed... we just weren’t on it and Rovers were up for it’ was Collenette’s assessment. The result left them six points off leaders Vale Rec and three behind St Martin’s, who have three games in hand on Sylvans and four on the champions.
‘Now I think we’re probably out of the running and I think it’s going to be between Vale Rec and Saints,’ said Collenette on the Guernsey Press Football Podcast.
‘Rec in my mind are the strongest team we’ve played – the last game, in particular, with their top four really firing again – so I think Saints are going to have their work cut out there. But who knows what’s going to happen the rest of the season? It changes so quickly.
‘For me, it’s like it’s a massive emotional rollercoaster because at the beginning of the season we won, I think, four or five on the trot and I thought it was fantastic. Then we start losing and I feel like a massive imposter, and it’s like that as a coach.’
However, Collenette is excited about the upcoming Stranger Cup and other knockout competitions, given the belief that his side can beat anyone on their day.
‘Last season we made two semi-finals, so we were really gutted not to get to finals. So this year I certainly want us, for the club’s sake really, to get into a final or two for sure – and we’re definitely good enough if we get our mojo back.’
