Purple pride on a historic night for Green Lionesses

THE Green Lionesses did themselves proud on a historic night at Footes Lane yesterday, but it was Sutton United who booked their place in the next round of the Combined Counties Women’s Cup.

Guernsey FC Women were playing on home soil for the first time and they took the lead in magnificent style only five minutes into the tie when Calleigh Hedley’s brilliant long-range shot found the net via the underside of the bar to send the big crowd of 706 into raptures.

Their support never wavered throughout, but Sutton United started to show their class after that bright start from the hosts, who were actually wearing purple on this occasion, and by half-time the yellows were ahead thanks to two contrasting goals from striker Milly Cutler.

Five minutes into the second half, Cutler was brought down in the penalty area and Beth Humphrey converted from the spot to give GFC a mountain to climb.

They fought hard till the end, though, and were unfortunate to concede a goal via a well-worked counter-attack in injury time, scored by substitute Ilanna Harris-Walters, as Sutton United emerged 4-1 winners.
