Allen leaves the Lane on a high

It was never in doubt. Ross Allen bid farewell to Footes Lane by scoring in his final appearance in front of the Garenne Stand before Guernsey FC move to Victoria Park at the end of the month as the club’s record-scorer sealed a vital 2-0 victory over the Metropolitan Police on Saturday.

‘If there was a bookie taking a bet on that, they would have been an idiot because of course he was going to score,’ said GFC coach Steve Sharman of Allen's emphatic second-half penalty.

‘But I’m really pleased for him. And I’m really pleased for him from the penalty spot because the challenge he’s had recently is he’s missed a few at home.

‘So for him to finish here at Footes Lane, scoring a penalty and giving us a really important strong three points, that’s fantastic.

‘He’s still a class act. He really is,’ he added of Allen, who celebrated his 38th birthday yesterday.

The coach also praised the whole team after beating one of their main Isthmian South Central relegation rivals, with Simon Arnold having opened the scoring shortly before half-time.

‘What we couldn’t do was lose today. So yeah, it feels a really, really important win,’ Sharman said.

Their victory combined with results elsewhere saw GFC climb out of the Isthmian South Central relegation zone.
