A chance to make history as Victoria Park hosts first Muratti

The first opportunity to lift silverware at Victoria Park falls to the Guernsey U18s in Sunday’s Junior Muratti.

It will be the first inter-insular at the new home of Guernsey football which opened its gates for the first time last weekend.

Manager Leon Meakin said he was happy with how the U18s were faring since the Stranger Cup – where they registered one 4-0 win against Rangers and lost 2-0 to North and 3-0 to Sylvans.

‘We don’t know too much about Jersey, but we do know about our guys, and looking at our journey since the Stranger, yes we had mixed results, but we had some really good performances,’ said Meakin.

‘We have trained consistently since then and I’m really happy with the way things are going.’

In the lead-up to Sunday, the U18s have been playing regular games and Meakin said he is impressed with how they have done in them.

‘The best of them was when we played Saints on Monday at Victoria Park on Monday which I was really pleased with, they drew 4-4 then,’ he said.

Meakin said narrowing the squad down to just 16 was a big task because of how strong the group is.

‘We got it down to 18, and then after our training session on Thursday we got it down to 16, but they made it really difficult for us,’ said Meakin.

This will also be Meakin’s first Muratti as coach. ‘I’m really looking forward to it, it’s where most of my energy has been to be honest, along with Jason [Leaman] and Doddie [Jamie Dodd], just getting them ready,’ he said.

‘It would be lovely to win, there is plenty of motivation there, lifting the first silverware at Victoria Park being one of them, but there is no pressure on the guys. They just have to focus on the game.’

Guernsey won the last home Junior Muratti on penalties in 2023.
