Kent taking a break from revision to make home Raiders bow

Fraser Kent’s route from the Guernsey Rugby Academy to the Raiders has been somewhat unconventional.

The young tight-head prop made his debut for the first team off the bench against Colchester last week and will be among the replacements for today’s clash with Sevenoaks at Footes Lane.

He jokes it is a good way to take his mind off his exams for a couple of hours as he takes up the story of his blossoming career.

‘I grew up over here, went to school here until I was 16 and then went away to Taunton for sixth form,’ Kent said.

‘I’ve been involved in the last few years in the Bristol Bears under-18 set-up and done a few bits recently with Scotland U18s, which has been really, really good.

‘Now I’m back for the Easter holidays and very grateful to have the opportunity to play for the men’s team over here.’

He added that he has kept in touch with Guernsey director of rugby Jordan Reynolds throughout the season with the view to playing some games for Raiders when it fitted into his busy schedule.

‘I’m really, really excited to come and play for my boyhood club for playing for the Island.

‘We chatted a bit through the season and it’s something that’s always been in the back of my mind as something I really like to do.

‘It was just a case of finding the time and finding when I’m able to.’

While he already viewed it as his ‘home’ club, Kent was still a new face to the Raiders players when he joined up with them. He has fitted right in, though.

‘It’s been really good,’ he said.

‘It’s a great group of lads and they’ve been very welcoming to me, coming in from different environments of course.

‘[I was] really buzzing last Saturday to get the shirt on for my debut and really excited to get on the pitch at home this Saturday.

‘It’s a great level of rugby to play, especially looking to going into university rugby next year to turn up there having played a few men’s games. And that too is really good.

‘The other thing I’m focusing on a lot while I’m over for Easter is doing loads of revision. So yeah, it’s nice to be able to actually play some rugby and not just have revision all day.’

Raiders against Sevenoaks kicks off at 2pm today at Footes Lane, with St Jacques Vikings playing Sevenoaks Seconds at 11.30am as part of a double-header.
