Scramble for flights ‘worth it’ for young boxers

Eleventh-hour flight trouble following Blue Islands’ collapse did not stop two young Guernsey boxers from turning up and impressing at a Jersey Leonis Show.

Daniel Jamieson put in a very promising performance in his first skills bout, and Josh Lazarou picked up a hard-fought victory, rewarding coach Nathan Green’s scramble to arrange a suitable flight for the Saturday after the airline’s shock announcement that they would be suspending operations.

Green had only matched Jamieson and Lazarou after having a call earlier in the week from Jersey to help fill in for late drop-outs for the show, which was against Gloucester and Wiltshire Select at the Radisson Blu.

‘We had the nightmare with the travel disruption to deal with, but luckily enough, with some hard work I managed to arrange last-minute travel to Jersey Saturday morning,’ he said.

It could have been especially unfortunate for Jamieson, who had his planned debut bout at the previous weekend’s Dinner Boxing Show cancelled due to an eligibility issue, yet this lucky save gave him the opportunity to face off and dominate against Jersey’s Joe Lynch.

‘The hard work was worth it for Daniel to finally get his first skills bout ... he boxed really well and is excited to get another bout next year,’ Green said.

‘With it being a skills bout no winner was announced, but with a performance like that the wins will surely be coming his way soon.’

Lazarou, who has been out of competitive action recently following his own bout falling through in Guernsey, instead competed for Jersey and against tall Bristol boxer Joseph McSweeney.

‘He started well and boxing to the game plan, won the first two rounds in my opinion, and the third was hard to score,’ Green added.

The Guernsey boxer had to dig deep in the third round, with both competitors starting to tire, but he ultimately received the split decision.

Green described the trip as a ‘great experience for both the boys to box away from home and come back with wins’.
