GFC’s loss in five figures following airline collapse

Guernsey Fc are facing a hefty loss of over £10,000 on pre-booked flights in November and December following Blue Islands’ collapse.

And it could have been far worse, as this figure only concerns a few Green Lionesses fixtures, with the men using Aurigny and the club having just held off booking the next block of four women’s matches before the airline announced it would be suspending operations.

Guernsey FC director and communications manager Nic Legg admitted that they could have lost upwards of £30,000 in different circumstances.

However, losing five figures on uninsured flights is no small matter for the club, who will now have to re-book for the affected women’s matches.

‘I don’t think we are going to be getting it back from Blue Islands,’ Legg said.

‘At the moment, we have to take it on the chin.

‘There’s nothing we can do. From a budget point of view, it completely breaks the budget and makes it very difficult.

‘We are going to have to find that money again.’

Legg highlighted their successful Rocking Bingo Night women’s fundraiser at the start of the month, but recognised that has been ‘swallowed up’ by the situation.

Guernsey FC Women have faced postponement of three consecutive fixtures this month, starting with last weekend’s scheduled match at AFC Varsity.

Given the issue of limited availability for a large group of more than 20 seats, they have been unable to secure such bookings at short notice, causing the postponement of their home match against Bemerton Heath Harlequins this Sunday and trip to AFC Stoneham on 30 November.

‘It’s a very unfortunate situation,’ he added.

‘I feel for people who have lost their jobs as well. It’s such a tricky situation.

‘From a practical point of view, we have lost the money and fixtures.’

Money aside, Legg has highlighted the effect on player morale at coming training sessions.

It is a significant setback for a team that were until less than two weeks ago unbeaten in Southern Region Women’s Division One South.

‘They have lost momentum on their season.

'From a sporting point of view, it’s really unfortunate.

‘What I’m hoping is that Aurigny will release their schedules very soon for January onwards.

‘We can rescue the season – without sounding too dramatic.’
