The Green Lionesses played their last home game of their inaugural English league campaign and gave crowd at Victoria Park something to cheer about on Sunday afternoon as they registered only their second victory since October in beating Havant & Waterlooville 2-1.

‘They worked hard and they figured things out a lot quicker than they have done in the past, so credit to them,’ said manager Anna Gauvain.

‘It was a lovely free kick from Candice [Bougourd] for Heidi [Dawber] to get the winner. We could have probably gone on and pushed on a little bit more, but we wanted to protect the lead.

‘We’ll have to give a shout out to Mollie [Watson] and Kellie [Creed] on the left side because they are both 17 and on that side to be together to deal with some of their pace and experience, I think they were outstanding today and probably shattered now.

'It was one of those where we knew we could make a change if we needed to, but they did really well.’

Gauvain said that a win in front of a home crowd against a side who are third in the Southern Region Women’s Football League Division One South has given her side confidence going into the final three games of the season.

‘We actually play better when we’re away from home, so this is going to spark those last three performances,’ she said.

‘Everyone is going to want to be involved in those and then we finish the season and look forward to the Muratti and Cherry Godfrey Cup, so it's all to play for for the players and who will want a shirt in those, and it’s just seeing who we can fit where and keep everyone fit.

‘Even when things haven’t been going so well everybody’s talking positively about it and it’s just the results not being quite there – we went through a difficult spell. People have stuck with us, the players have stuck with us and hopefully we can push on now to the last three away games and get something out of it.

‘It’s definitely where we should be, we’ve come in at the right level and can push on next season hopefully and get some more players involved. We’re heading in the right direction and I’m really pleased with the girls today.’

Next up for the GFC Women is a trip to Bemerton Heath Harlequins on Sunday.

The last time the two sides met Bemerton came out with a 2-1 victory, and the Green Lionesses will be hoping this time they can come back to Guernsey with three more points.
