Guernsey U19s beat France to make it two wins from two

Guernsey have all-but booked their place in the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup Europe Division Two Qualifier semi-finals with a game to spare after making it back-to-back wins to start the tournament.

The hosts followed up their opening eight-wicket success on Friday against Belgium with a 66-run triumph over France Cricket on Saturday in front of a good crowd at the KGV to sit pretty at the top of Group A with Monday’s clash against Germany at the Memorial to come.

It was not all plain sailing against the French as Guernsey slipped to 31 for 3 inside the first eight overs having elected to bat, but Freddie Forshaw and Evan Le Huray got their side back on track with a crucial fifth-wicket stand of 52 as they went on to post 207 all out. Le Huray top-scored with a fine 59.

Forshaw then shone with the ball as he claimed 5 for 14 with his leg spin as France were bowled out for 141.

‘It’s coming out nicely – it must be,’ said player-of-match Forshaw with a big grin, who had tied the French in knots in his opening spell without getting his just reward before he returned to the attack with a triple-wicket maiden that proved decisive.

‘It was just going past the stumps [in the first spell] – really annoying – so nice to get them in the end.’

He added that the key to success so far has been ‘working as a team’ and Guernsey want to continue to improve against Germany as they build towards the semi-final.

Meanwhile, in Group B Sweden were brought back down to earth after scoring 418 in their victory over the Isle of Man on the opening day as they suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Italy and Switzerland beat the Isle of Man by six wickets.
