Minister Yvonne Burford and chief officer Steve Smith have, for the first time, released details of how its planned system of tracking will work.
'The traditional way of telling where something is through a transponder which is bolted onto a ship or a plane and sends out a signal, so if you had one on bus registration number 70013 you could say there it is. The trouble is nobody wants to know where bus 70013 is because it's meaningless – it could be on the way to the depot,' said Mr Smith.
'Buses change routes throughout the day so in the morning it could be the 41, changing to the 51 at lunchtime and then later it's on the school run.'
He said that instead the new ticket machines would be coded to each route the bus was serving at that time.
