Senior constable has no issue with GE work

Guernsey Electricity is insisting that it did consult St Peter Port constables before starting to dig up part of High Street and Commercial Arcade this week.

Junior constable Jenny Tasker said earlier this week that parish officials had received no prior warning before reading about the work in the Guernsey Press and starting to receive complaints.

Senior constable Zoe Lihou said yesterday that if the utility had contacted her about the work she would have told them to ‘do what is necessary’ to maintain Town’s electricity network.

‘The heart of GY1 is old build and in need of modernisation. The infrastructure is old and at times needs updating,’ said Mrs Lihou.

‘It is not within the remit of the constables to thwart progress in modernising our town, nor would we wish to.’

Following Mrs Tasker’s claims that Guernsey Electricity failed to notify the constables, the utility insisted it consulted them earlier in the year.

‘We engaged with Traffic and Highways and communicated with the constables of St Peter Port in February, who were given the opportunity to raise any concerns at the time,’ said a spokesman.

He apologised for any inconvenience caused by the works to improve capacity and resilience of the electricity network.

‘The width of the passing points accommodates mobility scooters, prams and similar, although it is acknowledged that there is less overall space available,’ he said.

The utility said it would have been harder to carry out the work in the winter, when demand for electricity was higher, without having a negative impact on customers.
