Liberation bandannas give dog owners paws for thought

A group of Elizabeth College students taking part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme project have used the 80th anniversary of the island’s liberation as inspiration for their creation of a canine-friendly product.

The team has designed a range of dog bandannas, with the significance of the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day displayed front and centre on a backdrop of the Guernsey flag.

The bandannas – which are available to purchase for £10 – can be adjusted depending on the size of dog.

Mary-Anne Chamberlain, 17, managing director of the group – which also includes Oscar Martel-Welsh, 16, Alfred Brokenshire, 17, Rohan Morris, 16, and Remy Bichard, 17 – said the idea for the bandannas only came a couple of days before they had to submit their business proposal for the project.

‘We had an idea to do normal ties but we decided they would be too difficult to make and the target market would be too small.’

‘We were about to give up on the idea but then got inspiration from the Liberation theme as we’ve been doing a lot on it at school.

‘The Liberation is something islanders hold dear, and dogs are very popular with a lot of people, so why not merge the two?’

The group admitted they had been blown away by the quality of the final product, which was made by Printed in Guernsey.

‘We’ve had amazing feedback, so many people have been wanting to buy one,’ said Mary-Anne.

Since starting to advertise the bandannas last month, the group has already received more than 65 orders, with their first batch of 25 selling out in less than two hours.

‘We’re on course to get over 100 sales, which would mean exceeding the £1,000 mark,’ Oscar said.

‘We’re hoping we might even reach 200 before the project deadline in May.’
