Formerly known as just the Santa Fun Run, the popular family-friendly event is now opening up to any festive-themed outfits, with the traditional Santa suits becoming too difficult to obtain.

‘Over the years the Santa suits have been getting more expensive,’ said organiser Linda Garnham.

‘They were only felt-type material and ripped very easily so in most cases only could be worn once. When we first started the run the cost was about £2.50 a suit but presently they cost over £6. As there are a lot more Santa runs going on around the UK, it’s getting harder to source the cheaper suits, hence the reason we’ve opened it up to entrants to come in their own costumes. It’ll also be fun for the children to put their costumes together.’

There will be prizes for the best-dressed at the end of the run, and more than 500 people are expected to take part.

It was unable to go ahead last year due to a lack of funding, but this year the event has secured sponsorship from Sure and the continuing support of Aladdin’s Cave.

‘This is Aid Reaching Children’s biggest fundraiser of the year and we will continue to help sick local children, and also send Christmas presents to bereaved children in Ukraine who are hiding and being educated in shelters,’ Ms Garnham said.

‘These presents will bring a little bit of joy to these children who are constantly hearing sirens and bombs going off all day.’

Aid Reaching Children works to bring humanitarian aid to children around the world.

The run route starts at Pembroke and finishes at the Market Square. It will take place at 11.30am on Sunday 14 December.

The registration link and further information are available on the Santa’s Christmas Fun Run Guernsey Facebook page.
