At 10.30am on Friday 26 December crowds will gather at Cobo Bay to brave the winter waters, and in so doing support the Guernsey Cheshire Home.
‘We look forward to marking 25 years and raising much-needed funds for the Cheshire Home,’ said Rob Shepherd, chairman of the home, who himself participates in the swim every year.
The Guernsey Cheshire Home is a care home for individuals with serious physical disabilities, operating independently of States funding.
‘The difference between the Cheshire Home and other care homes is that other homes are trying to manage people’s slow decline,’ said Mr Shepherd. ‘We’re trying to give the best opportunity at life as we possibly can.’
With hundreds of swimmers involved in last year’s event, raising more than £12,000, organisers are now aiming to beat 2024’s total as they mark a quarter-century of the tradition.
Volunteers will be present with buckets and card machines to accept donations, and each swimmer is encouraged to donate at least £5. Post-dip, participants will be able to warm up with complimentary mince pies and mulled wine.
‘Boxing Day’s a great buzz,’ said Mr Shepherd. ‘There’s a beautiful atmosphere and a feeling of warmth.’
The Guernsey Cheshire Home is also selling a special 25th Anniversary Boxing Day Beanie Hat, available to purchase from the Tourist Information Centre in the Market for £10.
