Car park opposite underground hospital made Terre a L’Amende

The car park opposite the German Underground Hospital has been declared Terre a L’Amende and cars parked without permission can now be hit with a bill for £50.

However, visitors to the underground hospital will still be able to park there for free.

Infinity Asset Management Ltd was granted the status for the car park in St Andrew’s at the end of November and signs appeared over the Christmas period stating that the area was now strictly for visitors to the underground hospital. Those parking without permission would be liable to a fine of £50.

The term ‘Les Terres Mises a L’Amende’ – literally meaning ‘penalty land’ – is unique to Guernsey property law and is granted on application to the Royal Court.

The designation allows a landowner to enforce a set fine, presently £50, against those who trespass without permission and is normally used to discourage unwanted car parking.

The underground hospital is the largest Second World War structure in the Channel Islands and is currently operated by Gustav Limited in affiliation with Festung Guernsey.

However, the land and car park on the opposite side of the road is managed by Infinity Asset Management on behalf of its long-term owners.

Neither Infinity Asset Management nor Festung wished to comment on the changes.
